Atarashii is the transliteration into the Latin alphabet of a Japanese word meaning new, fresh, or novel. This is an i (い) adjective , as opposed to na adjectives , which are constructed by adding the ending na to a noun.
The negation or negative form of atarashii
As it is an i -type adjective , the negative form is constructed by replacing the ending i with kunai . In this way, when we want to say that something or someone is old or not new (or that it is not-new), we say atarashikunai .
How do you spell and pronounce atarashii ?
Atarashii is the way of writing this Japanese word in romaji , that is, in the Latin alphabet. Also, this word can be written in any of the three character systems of Japanese writing, namely the kanji , the katakana script , and the hiragana script . The following table shows the word atarashii written in all of these systems:

In addition to atarashii , the term arata (新た) is also commonly used as a synonym for new. Another related word is rookie, which was incorporated into Japanese as an anglicism, ruki (ルーキー), from the English word rookie .
On the other hand, an adjective related to atarashii is maatarashī (真新しい), which means “completely new” or “totally new.”
When is atarashii used ?
Atarashii is used in any situation where you want to express that something is new. This can be about an object as well as something as intangible and subjective as a feeling. It is also used to represent something new, fresh, recent, up-to-date, or modern.
Examples of sentences with the word atarashii
Below are eleven examples of the use of atarashii in different types of sentences.
1 I am going to buy a new bed today.
- Romaji: Kyō wa atarashī beddo o kau tsumoridesu .
- Kanji :今日は新しいベッドを買うつもりです。
- Hiragana :きょう わあたらしいべっど お かう つもりです。
- Katakana :キョー ワアタラシーベッド オカウ ツモリデス.
2 I love the smell of new books.
- Romaji: Atarashī hon no nioi ga daisukidesu.
- Kanji: 新しい本の匂いが大好きです。
- Hiragana: あたらしいほん の におい が だいすきです。
- Katakana: アタラシーホン ノ ニオイ ガ ダイスキデス.
3 You need to buy new lettuce to make a salad.
- Romaji: Sarada o tsukuru ni wa atarashī retasu o kau hitsuyō ga arimasu.
- Kanji :サラダを作るには新しいレタスを買う必要があります。
- Hiragana :さらだおつくるにわあたらしれたすおかうひつよがあります
- Katakana :サラダオツクルニワアタラシレタスオカウヒツヨガアリマス
4 Emilio and Verónica are the new editors.
- Romaji: Emilio to Verónica ga atarashī henshū-shadesu .
- Kanji : EmilioとVerónicaが新しい編集者です。
- Hiragana :えみりお と べróにcあ があたらしいへんしゅう-しゃです。
- Katakana :エミリオ ト ヴェróニcア ガアタラシー ヘンシュー-シャデス.
5 Himura Battousai needs a new sword because his old sword broke.
- Romaji: Hi-mura batousai wa furui katana ga oretanode atarashī katana ga hitsuyōdesu .
- Kanji :緋村バトウサイは古い刀が折れたので新しい刀が必要です。
- Hiragana :ひ-むら ばとうさい わ ふるい かたな が おれたのであたらしかたな が ひつよです。
- Katakana :ヒ-ムラ バトーサイ ワ フルイ カタナ ガ オレタノデアタラシーカタナ ガ ヒツヨーデス.
6 Yahiko left for a new dojo this year.
- Romaji: Yahiko wa kotoshi, atarashī dōjō ni mukete shuppatsu shimashita
- Kanji :弥彦は今年、新しい道場に向けて出発しました。

10 The new library is very spacious
- Romaji : Atarashii toshokan wa totemo hiroi desu .
- Kanji : 新しい図書館はとても広いです。
- Hiragana : あたらしいとしょかんはとてもひろいです。
- Katakana : アタラシー トショカン ワ トテモ ヒロイ デス.
11 I can’t repair it, so there is no other option than to buy a new one.
- Romaji : Naosenai kara, a tarashii no wo kau shikanai.
- Kanji :治せないから、新しいのを買うしかない。
- Hiragana :なおせないから、あたらしいのをかうしかない。
- Katakana :ナオセナイ カラ,アタラシー ノ ウォ カウ シカナイ.
