Searching for and learning about our ancestors can be an interesting challenge, especially if you are trying to discover a connection to some illustrious person, such as an important politician or scientist. Currently, genealogy resources allow you to obtain a lot of data and records about all the members of a family, even about those who lived several centuries before.

Ten steps to know if you are a descendant of a president

To find out if there really was a president in your family or if, for example, you belong to an aristocratic lineage or royalty, you can take the following steps into account.

Create your own family tree

Although it may be obvious, this step is essential and will be the basis of the entire investigation to find out if you are a descendant of a president. In addition, the family tree allows you to organize the information in an orderly way, something that will be very useful later, when you discover several generations of your ancestors.

You can make your own family tree on paper or on the computer. You can even fill out some of the family tree templates online or use some specialized genealogy websites.

research your lineage

Once you’ve created your family tree and filled in the facts you already know about your close family, children, parents, grandparents, and possibly your great- and great-grandparents, it’s time to dig further. To do this, consult with your parents, uncles and grandparents about family history. Sometimes a family member can remember details that others do not.

By consulting with several members of your family, you will be able to expand the family tree and obtain information about other more distant relatives. In addition to names, it is important to find out information such as dates and places of birth, nationality, dates of weddings, baptisms or deaths, military records, migration data, means of transport used, etc.

Check public records

Another option to find out more about your ancestors is to check the records of your city. You can go to physical government offices or find the data online.

Generally, in each site there are community, municipal, regional, provincial, state or national databases, which are publicly accessible and free. There you can find information about censuses, elections, documents, etc. With this method you can get a lot of information about a person’s ancestors.

Check the newspapers

Most newspapers have a digitized version of their past publications. Especially those most renowned newspapers.

In some libraries and on the web, digital versions of old newspapers can be found. There you will find articles, social pages, obituaries and other events that may have information about your ancestors.

Conduct extensive research

Most countries have had a long list of presidents, in at least two hundred years of history. Therefore, depending on the country in which you live, it is likely that your research will have to extend to that historical point or several centuries ago. This will require great organization and attention to detail. Try to record the information in a clear and orderly manner.

Take a DNA test

DNA tests are one of the most popular tools to find ancestors and learn other details about your lineage. Currently, it is possible to obtain incredible results with this method. Some DNA tests allow to know the ethnic variety of your ancestors. This can help you expand your search for information to other places.

Research the lineage of presidents

To fill in the gaps between your family tree and that of a potential president ancestor, you can research the lineage of your country’s presidents. As they are important figures, you are likely to find quite a bit of information about them online.

It is convenient to take into account not only the children of the president, but also the brothers or nephews, since the relationship could be in that genealogical line.

Take advantage of online resources

Another way to find out more about your ancestors is to take advantage of the genealogy resources that are already available on the web. You can upload your family tree, upload your DNA tests, check databases, check certificates and much more. This will allow you to discover more information and compare it with the data you already have about your family.

Join a genealogy community

Today, there are numerous online genealogy forums where participants share information about their origins and find people with the same last name or from the same region and other people who also undertook the search for their ancestors.

Keep an open mind to the possibilities

If after completing all these steps, you still have not found information that proves the connection between your family and that of a president, it is possible that there is no such relationship or that there is not enough data to corroborate it. In any case, it is advisable to keep an open mind to all possibilities.

Whether you have an illustrious relative in some branch of the family or not, searching for your ancestors can reveal valuable information about your origins and contribute to a better understanding of your family history.
