Trade and economy of the ancient Olmec civilization

The Olmec primarily worshiped the jaguar, and the jaguar was often depicted on statues and other artifacts. In addition, the Olmecs venerated the alligator, toads, and other reptiles. They also believed in mythological beings created from the mixture of different parts of animals.

The rulers had a close relationship with the gods and were given supernatural powers. In fact, it is believed that the colossal heads that are still preserved as a legacy of this culture were representations of them. Each head weighs approximately 40 tons in weight. The stones are believed to have been transported uphill, sometimes great distances, suggesting that there was a great deal of organization and manpower available in Olmec society.

language and writing

The Olmecs were the most advanced civilization of their time also on an intellectual level. They developed their writing system and their own calendar. This is believed to have been the basis for the writing of other later civilizations.

Epigraphic inscriptions were found, dating from 300 BC. C. Between the years 2002 and 2007, inscriptions dating back to 900 BC were discovered. For this reason, it is believed to be the oldest writing system in Mesoamerica.
