The metric system is a measurement system that uses the meter, liter, and gram as the base units of length (distance), capacity (volume), and mass, respectively. To measure smaller or larger quantities, we use units derived from metric units.
Capacity (volume) is measured in the base unit of the International System of Units (abbreviated SI, from the French Système international d’unités ) called liters (L). The most common units of capacity are the liter (L) and the milliliter (ml) and are used to measure the amount of liquid an object can hold. However, there are 7 units with which this capacity can be measured:
- Kiloliter (kl) 1000
- Hectoliter (hl) 100
- decalitre (dal) 10
- liter (l) 1
- Deciliter (dl) 1/10
- Centiliter (cl) 1/100
- Milliliter (ml) 1/1000
What is the liter?
The liter is a basic metric unit used to measure the capacity of liquids and is equal to one cubic decimeter (1 liter = 1 dm³). A liter is indicated by the letter “l” or L.
What is the milliliter?
The milliliter is a smaller metric unit that represents the volume or capacity of a liquid. It is used to measure a smaller amount of liquid and equals one thousandth of a liter (1 liter = 1000 milliliters). The milliliter is indicated by the abbreviation ml or mL.
How to convert liters to milliliters?
We know that 1 liter is equal to 1000 ml, therefore the conversion factor used to convert liters to milliliters is 1000. To convert liters to milliliters, we multiply the given amount by 1000. For example, let’s convert 6 liters to milliliters . So, 6 × 1000 = 6000 ml. Therefore, 6 liters = 6000 milliliters.
On the other hand, it must be taken into account that, to convert milliliters into liters, we divide the given amount by 1000. For example, let’s convert 7000 milliliters to liters. Thus, 7,000 ÷ 1,000 = 7 liters. Therefore, 7000 milliliters = 7 liters.
Important notes
- Unit conversion is an important part of measurement, and units are converted using the correct conversion factor for the quantity.
- 1 liter equals 1000 milliliters, 0.264 gallons, 1.0566 quarts, 2.1133 pints, and 1 kilogram.
