The word architect comes from the Greek word architekton which means chief ( archi- ) carpenter or builder ( tekton ). We often use the word architect to describe the artists and engineers who designed historic buildings or iconic towers and domes. However, starting in the 20th century, architects were required to pass tests and exams, and have a university certification. Currently the word architect refers to a professional with an approved title.
Landscape architects often work closely with their colleagues who plan and construct buildings. Landscape architects analyze, plan, design, manage and nurture the built and natural environments, according to their professional organization in the United States, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). Landscape architects have different training and specific requirements to obtain this title, different from those of architects dedicated to the development of building projects.
« Architects are professionals trained in the art and science of designing and constructing buildings and structures that primarily provide shelter. Furthermore, architects can participate in the design of the built environment, from how a building integrates with the surrounding landscape to its architecture or construction details, which involve everything from the interior of the building to the design and creation of furniture to be used in a building. specific space”. —National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB, United States.
« The most basic definition of an architect is a professional who is qualified to design and provide advice, both aesthetic and technical, on objects built in our public and private landscapes. But this definition barely scratches the surface of the role of an architect. Architects are advisers who can be trusted; their role is holistic, combining various requirements and disciplines in a creative process, while serving the public interest and addressing health and safety issues.” —Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC.
