What is a strong electrolyte?

The electrolyte is also known as an ionic solution . A solution is a homogeneous mixture that is made up of one or more solutes and a solvent. In a solution, the solute is the substance that is dissolved. The solvent, on the other hand, is the substance in which the solute is dissolved.

The electrolyte can also be defined as a substance that dissolves completely or partially (depending on whether the electrolytes are strong or weak) and produces a solution that conducts electricity. Electrolytes can also be concentrated (if they have a high concentration of ions) or dilute (if they have a low concentration of ions).

Differences between a strong electrolyte and a weak electrolyte

The difference between a strong electrolyte and a weak electrolyte is basically the ability of each to dissolve. In the case of strong electrolytes, it is a complete dissociation. However, in weak electrolytes the solute is not completely dissolved.

Another difference can be seen expressed in the equation for a strong electrolyte, which is as follows:

Strong electrolyte (aq) → cation + (aq) + anion – (aq)

In strong electrolytes, the chemical reaction is irreversible and results in products. In contrast, in the case of weak electrolytes, the chemical reaction is reversible. Therefore, the arrow marking the reaction points in both directions, pointing to products and reactants.

Importance of electrolytes

Electrolytes are very important both chemically and biologically. Some of its properties are:

  • Hydration of the organism . They also regulate the pH of the blood and are essential for the functioning of the nerves and muscles in the body. Electrolytes are usually measured by blood or urine tests.
  • Transport of nutrients to cells.
  • Prevention of dehydration . There are sports drinks on the market with electrolytes that prevent dehydration.
  • Conduction of electricity , which is harnessed in some electronic devices.

Examples of Strong Electrolytes

There are several examples of strong electrolytes. Some of them are:

  • strong acids , such as hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4 ).
  • ionic salts that are not weak acids or bases, such as common salt (NaCl).
  • strong bases , such as potassium hydroxide (KOH).
